Charleville sits at the edge of outback Queensland, where the sky is vast and the weather moves fast. Cloud cover and the occasional rain shower are part of life out here — and we've built the Cosmos Centre around that reality. Our guides know these skies intimately. They know when to wait, when to adapt, and when to take you somewhere even better.
When cloud makes outdoor viewing impossible, your night simply moves inside — into Queensland's largest planetarium, where the entire sky unfolds above you on a full dome. No squinting through an eyepiece. No waiting for your eyes to adjust. Just the universe, narrated by a guide who genuinely loves it, and a view that no telescope on the clearest night could give you all at once.

Our indoor exhibits, feature films, and guided experiences run regardless of what's happening outside. And when clouds make outdoor viewing impossible, your night moves into Queensland's largest planetarium, where we project the live sky across the entire dome above you. You'll see more objects, in more detail, than a telescope on the clearest night could ever show you. We'd almost dare the clouds to come.

Adapts to conditions
Your guide will begin the tour and watch for gaps in the cloud cover. We use specialist solar telescopes with hydrogen-alpha filters that reveal features — prominences, filaments, sunspots — invisible to the naked eye. In the case of thick, unbroken overcast or heavy rain, this session may be adapted or rescheduled.

Outdoor, weather permitting
On clear nights, your guide takes you to our outdoor observing area where powerful telescopes are trained on planets, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. Your guide explains exactly what you're seeing and why it matters.
Cloudy night: planetarium journey
Indoors when sky is not visible
When clouds roll in, your tour moves into Queensland's largest planetarium. The entire night sky is projected live onto the full dome above you. You'll explore the same objects you'd see through a telescope — often in far greater detail — with your guide narrating every step. Many visitors find this the highlight of their trip.
Through a physical telescope, your view is limited to one object at a time. Inside the planetarium, the entire sky is yours at once. We can zoom into the Orion Nebula, swing across to the Andromeda Galaxy, and step back to show you the Milky Way — all in a single guided session, with none of the limitations of atmosphere, light pollution, or eye adjustment. It's not a consolation prize. It's a different kind of wonder.

What to wear
Even in summer, evenings in outback Queensland cool quickly. Bring a light jacket for outdoor viewings — your guide will keep you comfortable regardless of the weather.
Checking conditions
We monitor local weather closely and will contact you before your booking if conditions are likely to significantly affect your session. You don't need to keep refreshing the forecast.
Photography
Cloudy nights are actually great for wide-angle photography of the facility and landscape. On clear nights, our staff can advise on astrophotography settings for your device.
